Snow Stars Quilt Block Video – Free Snowman Quilt Block Pattern

Sharing is caring!

This charming Snow Stars quilt block is an easy-to-make snowman filler block that pairs beautifully with any set of winter-themed quilt blocks to create a lovely winter table runner. A video is included!

First, I want to share the beautiful, free block patterns and fabric links with you. These four blocks are from the 2023 Riley Blake Designs sewing challenge, listed below from top left to right. I did several of the blocks, but all in different fabrics as I didn’t want one large quilt. My unfinished blocks are 10 1/4″.

You may already have extra quilt blocks! If so, turn them into a winter runner by adding our festive snowman block!

We also sell a variety of wool felt from National Wovens! See our collection here!

The Snowman block is very easy to make. I did a quick video below on putting it together. First, gather some supplies.

This is a very easy block to make! The video has a quick run-down of how to put it together, so there are no step-by-step photos here.

Decide what size snowman block you want to make. I used an 8″ plate on template plastic to make a half-circle, then traced it onto a piece of heat and bond. Cut it out, peel the paper off, and bond it to your snowman fabric.

Center the snowman, and bond it to your background block fabric. Place and bond the nose, eyes, and stars. Trace a line for hanging stars. Sew around the shapes and the stars line in a thick (12 wt.) thread. Use the snowman template flipped, and trace the smile. Sew the smile in red, 12 wt. thread. I used blush for the cheeks.

What is heat-n-bond?

What is heat-n-bond and why use it? It’s a double-sided adhesive layer for sewing projects. One side is an exposed rough adhesive. The other side has a paper covering. Draw your shape on the paper, cut, and iron to your fabric. NOTE: If your fabric has a right side, make sure to iron the cut shape to the WRONG side, then peel and iron it to your project (right-side up). Heat-n-bond is excellent for applique.

Heat and Bond UltraHold:

  • Offers a stronger adhesive bond.
  • Suitable for projects where sewing is not needed, such as no-sew hems or permanent decorations.
  • May stiffen the fabric slightly.

Happy Quilting!
