Puff pastry is a delight to work with—so simple and versatile! These puff pastry breadsticks are light, airy, and packed with flavor. I made them as a tasty side for our brocolli and potato soup. If you’re after an easy, fun breadstick recipe, this one is perfect. They work great as a dinner side or appetizer, and would pair wonderfully with a hot dip. Of course, they also make the best dippers for soup!
Table of contents for Spicy Cheesy Breadsticks
Gather the Main Ingredients – Spicy Cheesy Puff Pastry Breadsticks
- 1 egg
- 2 TBSP water
- 2 Sheets, frozen puff pastry or homemade puff pastry
- 1/4 c. flour for parchment paper and dusting
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup finely shredded cheddar (white or yellow)
- 3 tsp. finely minced garlic
- 2 tsp. chopped fresh rosemary
- 1 tsp. sea salt
- 1 1/2 tsp. black pepper
- 1 tsp. chili powder
- 1 tsp. onion powder
- 1 tsp. crushed pepper flakes
Recipe Tips: The cheeses and spices in this recipe can be exchanged for anything you like. Try different cheeses (finely grated or shredded) and your favorite fresh or dry herbs. Don’t roll out the dough too thin, but don’t leave it too thick either. Is that confusing? If the dough is too thin, you will have problems with the dough tearing, and if it’s too thick the breadsticks will be so thick that the middle will be doughy. Other than that, this recipe is a cinch!
Step-by-Step Instructions
You will need two sheets of puff pastry, normally sold two sheets per box, so that’s easy. You can also use our homemade puff pastry recipe!
- Thaw out the puff pastry for about an hour or overnight in the refrigerator.
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
3. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 large egg and 2 tbsp. water.
4. Mix the rest of the ingredients into another bowl. Combine well.
5. Open the thawed puff pastry dough very carefully on the floured parchment, and dust the top with a little extra flour.
6. Roll out the dough to be about 10 x 12 inches. The purchased puff pastry comes close to this size, so you don’t have to roll much.
7. Use a pastry brush to brush the dough with a very generous amount of the egg mixture.
8. Take one half of the cheese and herb mixture and spread evenly over the dough. Press the mixture down into the dough a bit.
Can you believe that you’re half-way done with making these already?
9. Now use a pizza or pastry cutter to cut the dough into 1″ strips.
10. Twist each puff pastry strip.
TIP: I found that the straws show more of the yummy filling if you lay them on the tray cheese/herb-side down and then twist.
And soon you have trays that look like this! They are beautiful puff pastry breadsticks!
Bake for about 15 minutes, until they turn a beautiful golden brown. Let them cool slightly—but don’t hesitate to enjoy one right away! If you’re serving them later, they reheat well; just wrap them in foil and warm at 200°F for a few minutes. You can also freeze them for later. 😊

I’ve noticed parmesan in two of your recipes just now. Do you have a favorite type or brand?
I’m off to the kitchen to try out the spicy cracker recipe with my new mill cup +filter!
Hi Amy!
I normally used the shredded parmesan over at Costco or Sam’s club. Sometimes it a mix of cheeses, which is still very good, and that’s the one I used in the cracker recipe. It’s good in that Mac and Cheese link on the forum too! Have fun!
